Funeral Celebrant in Portsmouth and Southsea
A calm, personal funeral ceremony can bring together the stories, values and relationships that made someone’s life their own. I support families across Portsmouth and Southsea in creating a farewell that feels sincere, fitting and carefully held.

Portsmouth is not simply an area I travel to for work. I lived in the city for more than 30 years and understand its distinctive neighbourhoods, its strong sense of community and the importance of its naval heritage. That local connection helps me approach each family with a genuine appreciation of the place, as well as the individual life being remembered.
I work with families in Southsea, Eastney, Milton, Copnor, North End, Cosham and nearby communities. A ceremony may take place at a crematorium, cemetery, memorial venue or another appropriate setting. Portchester Crematorium and Portsmouth’s cemeteries are among the local settings a family may consider; your funeral director can advise on availability and practical arrangements.

A funeral ceremony shaped around the person
There is no single correct form for a meaningful farewell. Some families want a wholly non-religious ceremony; others value familiar Christian prayers and hymns. Many prefer something between the two — a personal tribute supported by a reading, blessing, moment of reflection or other spiritual element. I can create non-religious, Christian, spiritual and blended ceremonies, without requiring your family to fit a label that does not feel natural.
The ceremony can include music, readings, poetry, contributions from relatives and friends, quiet reflection and a carefully written eulogy. Each element should earn its place. My role is to help you make those choices with clarity, and to shape them into a coherent service that has warmth and dignity without becoming impersonal or formulaic.
I also plan and lead memorial services and celebrations of life. These can be especially helpful following a direct cremation, when someone could not attend the original funeral, or when the family would value more time and flexibility to gather and remember together.

Military and veteran funerals in Portsmouth
My own career as a Royal Navy officer gives me an understanding of the traditions, symbolism and sense of belonging that can matter to service families. Portsmouth has a particularly close relationship with the Royal Navy, but I support veterans of the Army, Royal Air Force and other services too.
A military or veteran funeral does not have to be highly formal. Some families want a ceremony with several recognised service elements; others may choose only a naval hymn, a reading, a period of silence or a brief acknowledgement of service. I work sensitively with the family and funeral director, and where required alongside veterans’ organisations, standard bearers, buglers or serving representatives arranged by the appropriate parties.
Whatever is included, the person remains at the heart of the ceremony. Their service is part of their story, not a substitute for it. More detail is available on my page about military and veteran funerals.
From our first conversation to the day itself
We begin with a no-obligation conversation. If you choose me as your celebrant, we arrange a discovery meeting in person or online. You can tell me about the person who has died, the people and places that mattered to them, their character, humour, achievements and the small details by which family and friends knew them best.
We then agree the shape and tone of the service. I prepare the ceremony and write the eulogy, or help a family member develop their own tribute. You can review the wording and correct or add details before it is finalised. I also coordinate the ceremony with the funeral director so that the words, music and practical timings work together.
On the day, I arrive in good time, lead the service with calmness and clarity, and support relatives or friends who wish to contribute. My purpose throughout is to make a difficult responsibility feel more manageable and to help you honour the person you love.
